What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is one of the oldest, most commonly used medical procedures in
the world. Originating in China more than 2,000 years ago, it became better
known in the United States in 1971.
The classical Chinese explanation of Acupuncture is that channels of energy run
in regular patterns throughout the body and over its surface. These energy
channels, called meridians, are like rivers flowing through the body to irrigate
and nourish the body. An obstruction in the movement of these energy rivers is
like a dam that backs up the flow in one part of the body and restricts it in
others.
The meridians can be influenced by needling the acupuncture points; the
acupuncture needles unblock the obstructions at the dams, and reestablish the
regular flow through the meridians. The improved energy and biochemical
balance produced by acupuncture results in stimulating the body’s natural
healing abilities, and in promoting physical and emotional well-being.
What conditions can be treated with Acupuncture?
The World Health Organization (WHO) has listed the following diseases and
conditions that have been shown through controlled trails to be treated
effectively by acupuncture:
- Low back pain, neck pain
- Sciatica
- Tennis elbow, knee pain
- Periarthritis of the shoulder
- Facial Pain (such as trigeminal neuralgia)
- Headache, migraine
- Rheumatoid arthritis
- Essential hypertension
- Allergic rhinitis, hay fever
- Depression
- Primary dysmenorrhea
- Infertility
- Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS)
Acupuncture may help other conditions:
- Insomnia, stress, anxiety
- Menopausal syndrome
- Urinary incontinence
- Sports injury
How does it work?
By promoting the body’s ability to heal itself, people often experience
improvements in several areas of health, not just in the area they are seeking
treatment for. People respond to acupuncture differently; some individuals may
feel an immediate effect after the first treatment, while most will feel an
improvement after several sessions.
Do we use disposable needles?
Yes. The very thin needles we use are specially made for acupuncture and are
supplied factory sterilized and individually wrapped. The needles are discarded
properly after they are used.
